France’s maize acreage shrinks by up to 15 percent

French maize production is facing a dramatic transformation: in the current 2026 sowing season, the maize cultivation area is expected to shrink by 10 to 15 percent, according to industry sources. The French producers' association Maiz’Europ is issuing a strong warning about structural disruptions across the entire value chain – with consequences that extend far beyond agriculture.

France – a key maize producer in Europe

For decades, France has been one of the EU’s most important maize producers. French harvests supply not only the domestic market, but also numerous buyers in the European food, feed and starch industries. A decline of this magnitude therefore has an immediate impact on the entire European market structure.

Reasons for the decline

Several factors are contributing to the shrinking cultivation area. Farmers are under increasing economic pressure and are switching to alternative crops that appear more profitable under current conditions.

  • Rising production costs (energy, fertilisers, crop protection)

  • Water shortages and irrigation restrictions in many regions

  • Climate change and increasing weather extremes

Structural disruptions along the supply chain

The producers' association Maiz’Europ warns that a sustained decline will not only affect farmers, but also the entire downstream processing sector. This includes mills, feed manufacturers, starch producers and, ultimately, the food and pet food industries.

The possible consequences range from price increases and supply shortages to increased imports from third countries – with all the associated risks in terms of quality, sustainability and supply security.
